Talks and unique photographic opportunities at York this Autumn

The 75th anniversary season of Mallard breaking the World steam speed record has seen record crowds flock to all the associated events in York, Shildon and Grantham.

The National Railway Museum’s (NRM) next ‘Mallard 75’ events start over the half term holiday at their main York museum sponsored by Hornby. ‘The Autumn Great Gathering’ takes place between October 26 and November 8.

Over the almost two-week long event, there will be informative talks by Curators (free of charge) plus some photography and dining opportunities which have to be booked in advance.

An evening illuminated event will be taking place centred on the six LNER A4s called ‘Locos in a Different Light’ which runs between October 30 and November 2. The NRM is also hosting an art exhibition based around the ‘It’s Quicker by Rail’ theme.

This gives those that missed the summer ‘Mallard 75’ event a chance to see the six LNER ‘A4s’ together between 10am and 6pm daily between October 26 and November 8 and admission is free. The engines will be on display around the Great Hall turntable.

This is followed by ‘A Grand Thirties Gathering’ on the evening of November 7 between 7:30 and 11pm which costs £45 for a ticket. Why the cost?

This is thirties-themed informal dining event will offer ‘guests’ a vintage buffet menu inspired by the food served on the East Coast Main Line when travelling behind the A4s. The NRM says this is a chance to ‘relive the golden age of steam with like-minded people’ while surrounding yourself with classic sounds of the era.

It will also be possible to visit locomotive cabs in the evening and there is a dress code, lounge suits but anything that is inspired by the 1930s will be suitable.

And finally

Next year the two A4s that were repatriated on a temporary basis return home to Canada and America. There is one final chance to see them together and this is at the NRM northern base at Shildon between February 15 and 23 next year, between 10 am and 5pm and is free.
