YORKSHIRE - Over the weekend of the 30th June/1st July the Wensleydale Railway is holding a coin challenge at its Leeming Bar Station to coincide with the Railway’s 9th anniversary of re-opening. The aim is to eventually collect enough coins to stretch for 40 miles – the original length of the line – and use the funds raised to improve the track on the stretch of line from Leeming Bar to the junction with the East Coast main line at Northallerton so that it can be used by passenger trains.
Ken Monkman, the Wensleydale Railway Association’s fund raiser, said ‘This is a fun way to generate important funding for this worthwhile project. We need people to start collecting coins now, so that we can lay as many as possible on the platform at the station on our special weekend. 1p and 2p coins are very welcome, although we are happy to take larger denominations!’ Coins can be donated at any time before the event.
There will be a special anniversary fare for everyone who brings us some coins for the challenge.
