The Stephenson Railway Museum is home to a commemoration of the legendary George and Robert Stephenson – pioneers of the railway age.
The Stephenson Railway Museum is home to Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums’ collection commemorating the legendary George and Robert Stephenson – the local father-and-son pioneers of the railway age.
The museum offers the opportunity to relive the early days of steam and get up close to some of the oldest steam exhibits in the world, including Billy, a forerunner of the Rocket. The museum also boasts interactive exhibits and a host of events and activities with the chance to learn about the impact of coal and electric power.
The Museum also serves as the northern terminus and workshop of the North Tyneside Railway. Several of the museum's exhibits are kept in full working order for demonstration on the railway, including a unique 1909 electric locomotive.
