Darlington Railway Centre & Museum – known as ‘Head of Steam’ – is on the 1825 route of the original Stockton & Darlington Railway, and includes three significant S&DR (what is that?) heritage buildings: North Road Passenger Station, the Goods Shed and Hopetown Carriage Works.
Head of Steam’s exhibits include Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1, built for the opening of the railway, and Derwent, the earliest surviving Darlington-built locomotive.

Head of Steam also holds a number of historic rail artefacts including station and lineside signs, uniforms, furniture, tableware and paintings. The entrance hall and ticket office are restored in period style, enhanced by displays of items such as porters' barrows, luggage, posters and advertising.
