Discover more about the legendary ‘Mallard’ – still an official record holder as the fastest steam locomotive in the world.
This 4-6-2 steam locomotive, designed by Nigel Gresley in 1935 for the London and North Eastern Railway, the ‘Mallard’ still holds the official record as the fastest steam locomotive in the world, at 125.88mph.
The A4 Mallard boasted an iconic steamlined design, enhancing its aerodynamics, but contributing to visibility problems for drivers.
Built to run express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line, the LNER Class A4 Steam Locomotive remained in service until 1966 when the advent of diesels saw their demise.
In all, six of the locomotives have been preserved, two examples are currently overseas.
