Although it is thought that this will be the first visit of a ‘Castle’ to Lime Street, a classmate GWR Castle was displayed in Merseyside in 1969 when three steam engines including Tyseley based ‘Castle’ No. 7029 Clun Castle was towed by a diesel to Allerton Depot for an open day.
The GWR Paddington to Birkenhead route used smaller engines beyond Chester despite advertising ‘Kings’ and ‘Castles’ on the route, but were only used to Wolverhampton or Chester.
